Save ManageTwitter!

If you are a user of ManageTwitter.com and you would like ManageTwitter.com's service to continue, please retweet this tweet, use the tag #savemanagetwitter or leave a comment below. Twitter want us to remove the heart of our application - we need your support!

Here at Melon Media, we love Twitter. I mean REALLY love Twitter. We developed ManageTwitter.com in our "10% project time". Our other twitter products include AdAdmire - a monetisation platform with a twist for third party Twitter applications & @_spell - a spelling tool for tweets.

Managetwitter.com was developed in the spirit of strengthening the Twitter ecosystem. We believe the more relevant your Twitter stream is to the user, the more the user will engage with Twitter and thereby more value the user will add to the Twitter ecosystem. We've unfollowed nearly 6 million people for the over 35000 users who have used ManageTwitter. We receive constant thanks and compliments from users about the system and how the application assisted in raising the quality of their tweet stream. Here is a graph of the activity on ManageTwitter per day (the initial spike coming from a TechCrunch article). People love our service, they keep coming back, using it again and again.

Chart2

It surprised me therefore when we received an email this morning from Twitter:

"We're writing to let you know that your application, ManageTwitter, breaks our Automation Rules and Best Practices (http://help.twitter.com/entries/76915). Specifically, it facilitates bulk automated user unfollowing, which is not allowed. It's best for both our
users and your users if your application follows the rules, so please make the necessary changes, such as removing the "Select All" option (and requiring users to decide on each user individually) to bring your application into compliance. "

Yes our application does facilitate bulk unfollowing BUT ManageTwitter does not facilitate any *automated* bulk unfollowing, the user has to filter based on criteria. The user is still required to do significant processing to unfollow groups of people. Furthermore the system only allows unfollowing of up to only 100 at a time.

I do understand the spirit of Twitter's "Automation Rules and Best Practises" - unfiltered, unregulated automatic following and following is not what Twitter is about - we get that and support that.

But surely a service such as ManageTwitter.com that ENHANCES the Twitter user experience is adding value to the Twitter ecosystem? Over time a Twitter account can get "bloated" - accounts that you follow can become inactive, accounts that you thought would be interesting become stale, accounts that you followed can overtweet cluttering your stream and so on. Managing your followers and people that you follow can easily become a chore. We developed Managetwitter.com to assist users prune and clean their twitter account with the aim that the user will engage MORE with their own Twitter account.

We would like Twitter to reconsider their request to us to change the way our service works.

If you are a user of ManageTwitter.com and you would like ManageTwitter.com's service to continue, please retweet this tweet, use the tag #savemanagetwitter or leave a comment below.

Twitter want us to remove the heart of our application - we need your support!

Thanks.

Kevin Garber (@ke_ga) , James Peter (@zemaj) and the team.

Update Tuesday 27 April 2010: We are currently in discussions with Twitter and hope to report back on a positive way forward.  Thank you for all of your support.

Update Tuesday 3 May 2010: As per request from Twitter we will be changing the name of our service  - to ManageFlitter.com and we will also make the system changes that they have requested.  Hopefully the service will still remain of strong value to Twitter users.  Twitter have been professional and reasonable in their communications with us and we look forward to a good working relationship with them

Twitter is making a huge mistake. We got the same message this morning. We launched http://twitterclaims.com yesterday and received a message to change our domain for breaking the policies. So this leads me to believe they are trying to take down 3rd party twitter services altogether. I'm ready to fight this considering Twitter owes much of its success to their openness. Goodluck. I hope a little community activism will help twitter change their minds. :)

I think most of the problem is that the API rules are so vague and open to change. We read the rules closely and followed them to the letter. It's very frustrating to see Twitter coming up with their own interpretation on the fly. I don't see that we've done anything wrong here - we've done our best to comply, but this restriction beyond their rules really will hurt our service. If twitter doesn't want "bulk" unfollowing then surely these should be limited within the API limits? Telling us 2 months into developing this app that they've now decided that they don't like what we're doing without any information or reasoning doesn't bode well considering how much Twitter are push for third party support.

I just found this app and it helped me to unfollow about 500 people who were not following me back - so closed to conversation.

I'm ok with that if they're topical and interesting, but otherwise their presence in my Twitter stream dilutes the value of Twitter to me and therefore to the people who do follow me.

These tools may be abused by Marketeers but they are fundamental to Twitter business users, and we're the ones who might also be the one who might pay for Twitter in the near future...

Save this useful app for the good of Twitter itself!

I really like your application. Somehow, I already do what Twitter "recommends" when I use your service: I first deselect all people marked to unfollow and then select the ones I really want to unfollow. Following is not *only* about being followed back, I understand that not all the people I am following have an interest in following me back. Overall, I use the "Inactive", "Talkative" and "Quiet" buttons more, they provide good analysis.

Its not the "bulk" changes that twitter is targeting. Our policy complaint was over the use of "twitter" in our name. SoEven if ManageTwitter complied to the bulk issue, its my belief that twitter would still attempt to shut down the service. Keep me updated. I would imagine they are doing this to many of the wonderful apps out there that has vastly improved twitter as a service.

Screw you, Twitter. Why punish the people who are trying to make your service usable? If you did something to stop the rampant spammers from popping up day after day, we wouldn't necessarily need services like this.

I rarely unfollow more than a handful of people with ManageTwitter. I use it mainly to unfollow inactive users and users who don't follow me back. This service saves me hours, and I think it's ridiculous of you to block amazing services like ManageTwitter.

I would think it saves main frame power ( big geek talkin here) for Tweeter as well, less garbage bots in followers. Most of all this is one of the sweetest sites I have every used. It is so clean and well run. If you big boys at Tweet r smart you should take example! It is easier to use than some similar tweet off shots. Instead of axing these wonderful folks you should hire them! If the issue with Manage Twitter is the use of the Twitter name, I can understand that. The dudes should just change their name to Manage W/Salt Peter or somthin...cheers boys & girls

This is a poor move on twitter's part. Rather than going after renegade applications, they have chosen to spend their time pushing around a site that provides functions that really should be part of the twitter core.

I have never seen any form of automation in the unfollow here at Manage Twitter. Meanwhile, other sites clearly offer auto follow and unfollow options - so why harrass managetwitter.com?

Perhaps one compromise would be for the boxes next to user profiles to be unchecked at the start, and for us to have to go through and manually select each check box before unfollowing. That sounds like it would satisfy their requirements.

With this kind of decision making in place, it leaves no wondering why more and more people are dumping twitter in favor of Statusnet.

This is the best program to clean out the spammers/dead weight followers. I love the amount of info you get on each follower. You have to go through EACH follower to make a decision as to whether to continue following or not. Your program makes this decision easier and faster to make.

Please Twitter don't take this away from us.

Twitter suck. They do this to every application that allows mass unfollows. They think they are the Apple of the short msg world. They can do whatever they like and you have to accept AND like it, no matter what! Get an account suspended? See the nonsense you have to go through to get it reinstated. They don't follow any logic. In the grand scheme of things - what does it matter if you have 10,000 followers or if you unfollow 5,000? I mean really - what is the big issue here? Do Myspace care? Do Facebook care if you defriend 800 friends? It seems like Twitter are as big a bunch of babies about this as 12 years old girls on Twitter are - ooomg you unfollowed me - why? I think twitter are getting too big for their boots. I guess short of bringing in ads etc - there really isn't much for Twitter to do and therefore the management have decided pettiness in mass unfollowing is the way to go. Great job Biz. In 2 years when nobody gives a crap about Twitter - they will allow unprecedented access to Twitters API - until that day - you get bullied by them.

I need Manage Twitter! Please consider the compromise if that is all they want. It makes no difference if I manually check who to unfollow or who I stay following.

After all, it is fully complient with Twitter's wish to follow back followers. I follow back mostly when someone new follows me - but when they don't stay with me, why should I then not have an easy way to find out and unfollow again? Makes no sense, really.

Don't shut Manage Twitter down! By now it's probably the only remaining service by which you can effectively organize and filter through increasingly long follow lists to ensure that your stream remains engaging and relevant. Unless Twitter allows an easier way to view who is/isn't following back (or who has/hasn't been recently active), it would be a downright shame to lose a feature which, quite frankly, many users want and need. If a compromise needs to be struck, then please — by all means.

To use social media effectively, you need tools to manage the people and the conversation.

ManageTwitter is a valuable tool that allows you to see what people are interested in participating in a conversation with you. Without tools like ManageTwitter, it's hard to evolve an audience of people that are mutually interested in having a conversation.

It's absurd of Twitter to hamstring people who need tools like this to build a robust following of people that care to converse.

Y'all should keep in mind that when you get the "Twitter over capacity" it is due, in part, to it taking a pounding from all the external applications that make use of the API. I don't think they're trying to curb anyone's freedom here so much as they're trying to keep traffic leveled out so that we see less of those whales. Think of how huge they are and how hard it must be to keep up with the daily exponential increase in traffic as people write apps like this. Cooperate with them, and I bet they cooperate with you. It's probably just the "select all" feature that they're concerned about. Why not just set it to a lower max or something? The "all or nothing" doesn't really help anyone. It's like me opening up my home to everyone for liberal use and then the people I let inside won't try to work with me when I ask them to maybe eat the food a little less slowly so that others can have some, too.

ManageTwitter helps me to constantly re-shape and optimize my social graph. By doing so, Twitter remains MORE relevant to me, rather than suffering from the social bloat that I have encountered in Facebook, Myspace, Livejournal, and countless other social networking channels.

I think Twitter should look at how the program works. Perhaps by not automatically selecting all the check boxes or giving us the option on how this operates with the default being unselected will solve the issue. It seems paranoid to me that Twitter would be this heavy-handed. They are doing more damage to their brand by taking this position that they would lose by the use of the service.

It's applications such as Manage Twitter, that help fill in the gaps on what Twitter isn't doing. As more and more of us begin to rely on Twitter to keep in touch with our most valuable RSS feeds, Twitter has a responsibility to support those aps that make it easier to use. I can think of a whole lot of apps that are not useful, so it seems very unfair to snub apps selectively. Twitter, please rethink this!

Maybe only allow 100 unfollows a day?

And other apps will facilitaty bulk unfollowing in 'hidden' manner: randomtime one by one unfollowing.

Or maybe twitter could make a button itself 'unfollow all unfollowers'? I will keep onunfollowing periodically unfollowers to keep cohesion high.

Causes only much more time without an app like managetwitter.

I hope some sensible solution will be found!

Some other clean up Twitter companies just do the unfollows in small batches so it doesn't alert Twitter. Surely, we should be able to have a system that allows us to unfollow easily. It's nuts.

One thing though. I used your service this morning for the first time and it told me of at least on person who was not following me, but who actually is. Caused a bit of a problem. Not sure how many others I unfollowed who actually are following me.
